World Economic and Political Biweekly Forum:

Professor Da Wei, University of International Relations

The US election and the possibility of resuming the Sino-US relation

On October 22, 2020, the second World Economic and Political Biweekly Forum was held as scheduled at Institute of World Economics and Politics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Da Wei, Assistant to the President and Dean of the department of international politics of University of International Relations, gave a lecture on The U.S. General Election and the Possibility of Restarting Sino-U.S. Relations. Yao Zhizhong, Secretary-General of NIGS presided over the forum.

As the U.S. presidential election is entering the white-hot stage, Professor Da first made a brief analysis of the recent US polls and election trend, and made strategic prediction on the short-term crises and challenges of Sino-US relations under the background of the election. At the same time, combined with the development history of American bipartisan politics and the United States' international strategic line, Professor Da believes that the U.S. election is related to the extent to which the establishment/neoliberalism can be restored.

In addition, in the past ten years or so, China’s identification of neoliberalism and hyper-globalization of the U.S. has gradually faded since the 1980s, and America’s concerns about China’s ideology, economic policies, and national power have been increasing. Professor Da elaborated on the possible medium-and-long-term development trend of Sino-US relations in the future from two perspectives: the prospect of Trump's strategy for China if he is re-elected and Biden's space for the correction of Sino-US relations.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Da summarized and introduced other enlightening research issues in the field of Sino-US relations and had a lively discussion with the audience regarding the on-site questions.
